Our History

Our History is that we began our life as a Private Members club back in 2003. Our first premises were on the top floor of Carliol House. We built the bar ourselves and fitted it out to make it as comfortable as possible, it even had a beautiful atrium, but with no lift that the members had access to and a huge 4 flights of stairs, we were worried about our older retired members making it to the bar in one piece. So after 2 years in the clouds, looking down onto 'For Your Eyes Only' we thought it was time to move on.

We soon found a potential new premises and it was a 'proper pub'. The recently closed Callaghans Irish Bar, on the corner of Market Street and Carliol Street looked perfect. Once a deal was struck with the owners of the Holiday Inn Hotel, who owned the premises we moved in in March 2006. The committee worked their socks off carrying all the equipment from the old place to the new place but once we opened we thought we had the best pub in Newcastle. We've had many happy times in this club (not watching Newcastle United, mind). We've giving a lot of the older lads a proper retirement send off, we've had great live band nights and comedy nights. However The Holiday Inn became a Travelodge and eventually the hotel closed, the writing was on the cards for us. So with that in mind we realised it was time to move again.

Our move to the new premises is well documented on here. Our hand was forced and onwards we moved. Again the committee pulled out all the stops (carrying a pool table up two flights of stairs is never easy) but we believe it's turned out fantastically. Our new premises looks amazing. It has central heating in the winter and air conditioning in the summer, who'd have thought you'd need that, and the committee are very proud of what we have achieved.

In 2021 we incorporated into a Limited Company, Tyneside leisure Ltd, to protect the committee and the members, but we still trade as Northumbria Social Club.

The next chapter of 'the club' is yet to be written, we're hoping our members will help us write it
